OBDSTAR Official FAQ: Unlocking Bosch MD1 MG1 Encrypted ECUs

Here is OBDSTAR official response regarding unlocking encrypted Bosch MD1 and MG1 ECUs (including BMW B48, B57, and B58 models) via Bench/Boot. Learn about supported hardware configurations, required adapters (C4-06 / ECM-003), software licensing, safety requirements, and data compatibility.

OBDSTAR Unlock Bosch MD1 MG1 Encrypted ECUs FAQ 1

1.Compatible Devices & Required Adapters

To unlock and service encrypted Bosch MD1 and MG1 ECUs, OBDSTAR supports three main hardware platforms:

Note: OBDSTAR C4-06 universal adapter handles data reading, writing, and unlocking across supported MD1/MG1 ECU variants.

2.Licensing & Software Updates

Unlocking capabilities are included at no additional cost. As long as your OBDSTAR device maintains an active annual software subscription, the unlock features update automatically without per-use token fees.

3.Physical Bench Setup & Technical Requirements

Unlocking requires bench access (opening the ECU casing) and micro-soldering connections to boot-mode pins on the circuit board.

Key Precautions for Technicians:

  • Casing Removal:Pry tools can easily damage internal multi-layer PCB traces. Apply direct heat to the edge sealant to soften the adhesive before opening.
  • SMD Resistor Handling:The unlock procedure requires desoldering and removing small SMD resistors. Work should be performed using temperature-controlled soldering stations to avoid lifting pads or losing components.
  • Wiring & Dedicated Harnesses:Connection drops or voltage dips during the boot process can corrupt ECU firmware. For BMW B48, B57, and B58 engines (BOSCH MD1CP032 TC299TP, MG1CS024 TC298TP, and MG1CS201 TC298TP) data read/write & ISN read, we recommend using OBDSTAR ECM-003 Wiring Harness to work with OBDSTAR G3, DC706, and ECU Master Full Version/Configuration A to eliminate pinout mistakes.

4.Operations & Data Compatibility

  • Third-Party Tool Locking:ECU unlocking performed via OBDSTAR is active strictly during OBDSTAR device session. Disconnecting power automatically re-engages factory protection. Third-party tools cannot directly read or write while the ECU is in this unlocked state.
  • Data Extraction & Checksum:All Flash and EEPROM files extracted via OBDSTAR devices are saved in unencrypted binary formats, making them fully compatible with third-party editing tools. Automatic checksum calculation is supported for FLASH read/write.
  • BMW ISN Support:The system currently supports BMW ISN reading. ISN modification functions are currently in development.

5.Bench Power Supply Specifications

Bench operations demand clean, stable power. Using inadequate power supplies risks bricking the module due to voltage spikes or drops.

  • Output Specs:Regulated DC power supply rated at 13.0V – 14.0V with a minimum 60W power delivery capability.
  • OBDSTAR ECU MasterUsers: The factory power supply included with ECU Master meets all operating requirements. Avoid standard wall adapters with unstable voltage outputs.
